Colorado Springs is the second-most populous city in the Colorado region, located about 38 miles south of Denver.2 The city is located near the base of Pikes Peak, which rises 4,302 meters above sea level on the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The Ute, Arapaho, and Cheyenne peoples were the first recorded inhabiting the area which would become Colorado Springs.
